Preparing Social Work Students for the Climate Era: A Faculty Panel Discussion
To promote the launch of the Environmental Justice in Social Work Advanced Certificate, carried out in partnership with the Environmental Studies Department, faculty from the School of Social Work (SSW) worked with the FCPE to produce a video of a panel discussion about environmental justice social work. Back when the SSW faculty first voted to establish the Environmental Justice in Social Work Advanced Certificate, which students can obtain while pursuing their MSW, there were no such environmental justice programs in the New York Metro area. Existing programs nationwide focused on the impact to rural communities or collective trauma resulting from climate related disasters. At that same time, the National Council on Social Work Education mandated the integration of environmental justice concepts into social work curriculums, thereby signaling the social work professions’ responsibility to address climate change, ecological degradation and environmental injustices. The SSW seized this opportunity to be the first program to specialize in environmental justice in an urban context and in the impact of rising sea levels and storms on local communities. Through its longstanding Postgraduate Certificate in Environmental Justice for Social Workers, offered regularly to practicing social workers through the School of Social Work Continuing Education and Professional Development Program, and this newly launched Environmental Justice in Social Work Advance Certificate Program, the SSW at 91¹ú²ú is now leading the charge in the Northeast in educating and training social workers to engage in environmental justice social work practice.
