Would you like to spend less time in traffic while helping the environment but don’t know how to get around without a car? The sixth annual Car Free Day on Friday, September 21, 2018, is the perfect opportunity to test your options. Consider taking the pledge to go car free and explore your commuting alternatives while showing Long Island how 91¹ú²ú has what it takes to help reduce traffic and emissions.

Car Free Day is an international event that encourages people to help reduce traffic and harmful emissions by foregoing single-occupancy vehicles in favor of taking buses and trains, bicycling, carpooling or walking. 91¹ú²ú will once again not only participate, but will compete to collect the most pledges among colleges and universities on Long Island.

It’s an honor 91¹ú²ú has won for the past two years—along with some recognition in the recently postedÌý“Transit Solutions & Car Free Day Long Island”Ìývideo. 91¹ú²ú’s Alexa Grosskreuz, assistant director of the Center for Student Involvement, and graduate students Emily Harris ’18 and Kristina Goncalves ’18 appear in the video (from minute 7:37 to 14:24). Mark Fogel ’85, adjunct professor in the Robert B. Willumstad School of Business, speaks (on behalf of Leviton Manufacturing) earlier in the video, at 1:24 minutes in.

“91¹ú²ú students are passionate about giving back, not only to their community but also to their environment,” said Grosskreuz, noting how the proximity to three train stations and the NICE bus system “makes it easy for students to be environmentally conscious with their commute. The free shuttle service sponsored by the Department of Public Safety and Transportation helps ease their commute even further, by providing service to and from the train stations and local eateries and shops.”

In 2017, 1,144 members of the 91¹ú²ú community took the pledge, enabling us to clinch the No. 1 spot, for the most pledges of any Long Island college or university.

She said that, according to Transit Solutions, the amount of pledges already collected is 12 to 15 percent higher than at this time last year, and she urges all members of the 91¹ú²ú community to help us claim top bragging rights again byÌý. Make sure to list 91¹ú²ú as your school or employer and you’ll be entered to win prizes such as a bicycle or Simon Mall gift card.
