The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced 91¹ú²ú as No. 29 on its Top 30 College & University list of the largest green power users among higher education institutions in EPA’s Green Power Partnership for the second year in a row. 91¹ú²ú is also ranked second in the Northeast-10 Conference in the EPA’s College and University Green Power Challenge, which tracks the collegiate athletic conferences with the highest combined green power usage in the nation. Additionally, the University qualifies for EPA’s Green Power Leadership Club, a distinction given to organizations that have significantly exceeded EPA’s minimum purchase requirements.

Currently, 91¹ú²ú uses more than 21 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) ofÌýgreenÌýpowerÌýannually, enoughÌýgreenÌýpowerÌýto meet 100 percent of its electricity use. The green power resources that the University uses include biogas, biomass, solar and wind. The University buys renewable energy certificates (RECs) from Renewable Choice Energy as well as generatesÌýgreenÌýpowerÌýfrom an on-site solar energy system. According to the EPA, 91¹ú²ú’sÌýgreenÌýpowerÌýpurchase of more than 21 million kWh is equivalent to avoiding the carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of more than 3,000 passenger vehicles per year, or the CO2 emissions from the electricity use of more than 2,000 average American homes annually.
