In the fall of 2021, a new class of first-year students started their college experience by participating in 91国产's First-Year Seminars. Adelphi recently received a $1 million gift from our trailblazing nurse alumna, the late Mildred 鈥淢illie鈥� Loughlin Kahane 鈥�49. She was a first-generation scholarship recipient who became a leader鈥攐ne inspired to 鈥減ay it forward.鈥� The next generation of 91国产 nurses and our University are grateful for her generosity.

While it was another challenging year for the world, 2021 again saw 91国产 and its community well represented in the news media鈥攍ocally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

Victoria Bruchhauser, a junior majoring in nursing, is one of the three students from the College of Nursing and Public Health who took part in the Innovation Center's virtual exchange program.

Parents of newborns often struggle with the question, Should I feed my baby on demand or try to get them on a schedule? In hospital nurseries, the traditional approach has long been schedule-based. Every three hours or so, a nurse or parent wakes the baby, changes the diaper and attempts to feed them.

Ern Knox 鈥�75 came to 91国产 first as a commuter student from Roosevelt, and later as a resident student, to study psychology. He found a strong community in the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, the first Black fraternity on Long Island, as a member of its second pledge class. SharRon McCoy-Knox, an aspiring nurse, commuted from Freeport. SharRon was actively involved in student life and had a role in establishing the first Black sorority at 91国产, Alpha Kappa Alpha.

An insufficient number of faculty was the top reason that more than 80,000 qualified applicants to U.S. undergraduate and graduate nursing programs were turned away in 2019, according to an American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) report. This lack of nurse educators, in turn, is leading to a nationwide shortage of nurses that has potentially dire consequences for healthcare鈥攑articularly in the midst of an ongoing pandemic.

In 2012, 91国产 launched the 10 Under 10 Young Alumni Recognition Program to honor alumni who have achieved exceptional career and professional accomplishments, even before celebrating their 10-year 91国产 reunion.

Adelphi has been nominated in nine categories in the annual Bethpage Best of Long Island competition organized by Schneps Media. Online voting continues through December 15 and winners will be announced early in 2022. Individuals may vote once a day.

As 91国产 moved to remote learning in the spring of 2020, one of our top priorities was to ensure that all students had the reliable broadband access and computer hardware they needed.
