Join us for a fascinating interdisciplinary faculty talk by Monica Morales Hernandez from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.

This interdisciplinary event explores the fascinating connections between mathematics, art, and artificial intelligence through the concept of turbulence. Participants will learn about the Navier鈥揝tokes equations, which describe the motion of fluids and remain among the most challenging 鈥渙pen鈥 problems in mathematics.

The event will also examine the controversy surrounding claims that OpenAI has made progress toward solving the Navier鈥揝tokes problem. We will discuss what it means to 鈥渟olve鈥 a mathematical problem, the challenges of verifying AI-generated mathematical results, and the implications of artificial intelligence for mathematical research and discovery.

Drawing connections to the swirling patterns found in Vincent van Gogh鈥檚 and other artists鈥 artwork, the event will explore how mathematics can help us understand complex phenomena in nature and how art and AI can inspire new ways of thinking about mathematical ideas.
