Location: Virtual

When clients and caregivers are confronted with a life-altering or life-limiting illness, they are often plunged into existential angst, frequently wrestling with the rhetorical question, 鈥淲hy me?鈥

The sudden pressure to either find immediate purpose or 鈥渟eize the day鈥 can feel psychologically overwhelming, often exacerbating somatic distress and trauma responses.

This 3-hour workshop equips clinicians with evidence-based techniques to guide clients and caregivers through the specialized 6 pillars of meaning-making. Beyond client-focused interventions, this course addresses a critical, often overlooked dimension of end-of-life and chronic illness care: clinician countertransference. Working at the intersection of mortality, grief, and chronic illness can trigger a therapist鈥檚 own existential fears and personal history with loss. Clinicians will learn to identify this countertransference, utilize self-regulation strategies to prevent vicarious trauma, and ethically leverage their internal experiences to deepen the therapeutic alliance.

Through clinical case studies, interactive lectures, and experiential personal application, participants will leave with a practical framework to foster resilience.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this 3-hour workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify and describe the 6 core pillars of meaning-making and explain how to introduce these topics to clients navigating acute or chronic health crises.
  2. Recognize common signs of existential countertransference in illness care, differentiating between personal grief/death anxiety and objective clinical empathy.
  3. Practice and implement at least two practical somatic or cognitive coping tools to help clients process existential distress and the pressure to find immediate purpose.
