I am thrilled to share some exciting news about one of our distinguished alumni who is making an incredible impact in our community. The Adelphi Board of Trustees appointed Leonard C. Achan 鈥�99, MA, RN, ANP, as our new board chair following a special meeting in July, taking over from Trustee William Fuessler 鈥�79, who stepped up as acting chair for the past five months.

Chair Achan鈥檚 story truly embodies the 91国产 spirit. A proud first-generation American born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens, he began his professional journey right here on our campus, earning his bachelor鈥檚 degree in nursing. Like so many of his fellow nursing alumni, Chair Achan started his career at the bedside as a medical ICU nurse and adult acute care nurse practitioner鈥攁n experience that deeply informed his compassionate approach to leadership as he became an accomplished healthcare executive and community and business leader.

Today, Chair Achan serves as president and CEO of LiveOnNY. He previously served as the inaugural president of the Innovation Institute at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) after serving as their chief innovation officer. Prior to that, he led major executive initiatives across several roles at the Mount Sinai Health System and served as senior associate dean for global communications, branding, and reputation at the Icahn School of Medicine. As co-founder and chairman of Quality Reviews Inc., he built a digital health platform deployed in more than 150 hospitals, elevating the care experience for more than 30 million patients nationwide.

Throughout his career, Chair Achan鈥檚 devotion to 91国产 has never wavered. While serving for more than a decade as a trustee, including five years as a board officer, he has consistently invested back into our campus鈥攔eturning to lecture, establishing two endowed scholarships, and founding the Achan Family Interfaith Center.

Having worked with him during my time on the board and in our recent conversations, I have seen his razor-sharp mind, energy, and deep passion for our university firsthand. He is a shining example of our strength in producing leaders in nursing, health care and business. I have the utmost confidence that his ambition and commitment to higher education will continue to drive 91国产 forward.

I also want to thank Trustee Fuessler for his steady leadership of the board. His partnership with our senior leaders helped maintain our standard of excellence during an important time of transition at 91国产. His real estate ventures include multifamily developments, self-storage facilities and vacation rentals across the United States. He is also deeply committed to charitable work, founding the Amplo Family Foundation and co-founding the DezyStrong Foundation, while serving on the boards of multiple nonprofits. Black has been instrumental in Latham鈥檚 rise as a top global law firm, overseeing its international growth and operational evolution. She has championed innovation and the early adoption of technologies to enhance efficiency and client service. A certified public accountant, she began her career as a senior auditor at Arthur Andersen & Co. and now draws on three decades of leadership experience at Latham. She has been recognized as a trailblazer in the legal sector and was named one of the Top 10 Innovative Individuals in North America by The Financial Times in 2017. Black previously served on the 91国产 President鈥檚 Advisory Council, chairs the board of trustees of The Chapin School, and devoted 15 years to the board of Pro Bono Net, an organization dedicated to expanding access to justice. She is also co-chair of 91国产鈥檚 annual Women鈥檚 Leadership Conference.

Bruce A. Jones 鈥�82, PhD, is a renowned educational leader, scholar and administrator who is currently a professor of political science in the College of Arts and Sciences at Howard University. He previously served as Howard University鈥檚 senior vice president for research and was instrumental in securing its historic R1 Carnegie Classification. Over a dynamic career spanning higher education and public education policy, Dr. Jones has held prestigious academic and administrative posts, including vice provost for academic affairs and interim dean of the Graduate School at the University of Houston. He has also held endowed faculty chairs at the University of South Florida and the University of Missouri. A proud alumnus who earned his undergraduate degree from 91国产, he has a PhD in political science from Columbia University. His research foci include leadership and public policy in higher education and K鈥�12 education, the politics of education, the sociopolitical history of education, studies in community development, and institutional assessment and program evaluation in education and the nonprofit sector.

Walter P. Schmidt 鈥�84 is a co-founder of Rockwood Capital, a prominent private equity real estate investment firm, and has 40 years of experience in real estate investment on behalf of institutional clients. He served as a senior managing partner until 2022, when he became senior partner focusing on strategic client relationships. With the formation of Harrison Street Asset Management in 2025, he continued as senior adviser. He began his career in 1984 with Touche Ross & Co (currently Deloitte). He is a member of the Pension Real Estate Association, AFIRE and INREV and served on the President鈥檚 Advisory Council of 91国产. He also serves on advisory boards serving youth development programs in the United States and Central America.

On Thursday, June 11, the 91国产 Board of Trustees hosted the official ribbon cutting and celebrated the grand opening of the University鈥檚 state-of-the-art Manhattan Center. Located in the heart of New York City at the corner of Fifth Avenue and 44th Street, the highly anticipated facility is poised to serve as a critical talent pipeline for the city鈥檚 most high-demand industries.

The grand opening event welcomed University leadership, distinguished guests, community partners and Helen Arteaga Landaverde, PhD, New York City鈥檚 deputy mayor for health and human services, for an exclusive look inside the modern academic hub, which comprises three floors and more than 51,000 square feet. During the ribbon-cutting festivities, attendees participated in guided tours of high-tech classrooms; STEAM, nursing simulation and computer labs; and student lounges, study spaces and collaborative learning areas.

Construction on the facility began with a groundbreaking in April 2025. Designed to meet the evolving needs of today鈥檚 workforce, the Manhattan Center鈥檚 鈥減rograms in healthcare, technology, business, human service and education will bring the best of 91国产 to Manhattan,鈥� said Jennifer Lancaster, PhD, executive director of the Manhattan Center and dean of the College of Professional and Continuing Studies. The center has already begun transforming career pathways for its students: The inaugural student cohort began in May 2026 with 91国产鈥檚 accelerated nursing program, designed to address the region鈥檚 nursing shortage. STEAM education programs are also underway. The remaining Manhattan Center graduate and professional programs are scheduled to begin in Fall 2026.

As we come to the close of the Spring 2026 semester, we鈥檇 like to share some updates on Adelphi鈥檚 Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE) reaccreditation process and how we鈥檝e progressed during the semester.

A successful reaccreditation relies on the voices of our entire community, and this spring, we have been actively listening:

• In February, Steering Committee Co-Chairs Lawrence Hobbie and Liz Ciabocchi met with the Student Government Association to provide updates and information about the MSCHE re-accreditation process. The students were highly engaged, providing valuable insights into their educational experiences and offering thoughtful suggestions for how we can continue to improve.
• Interim Provost Susan Dinan provided key updates to the Board of Trustees in March, while Drs. Hobbie and Ciabocchi briefed the Deans Council, Assistant/Associate Deans and Executive Leadership during March and April.

Behind the scenes, our seven working groups鈥攅ach dedicated to a specific Middle States standard鈥攈ave been hard at work gathering and analyzing data from across campus. They are on track for a June 1 completion date for the first draft chapters of our University Self-Study, which will serve as the foundational blueprint for our institutional review.

As we move from data gathering to review, here is what you can expect over the next year:

• Summer 2026: The MSCHE Executive Steering Committee will review, edit and connect the working groups’ chapters into a single, cohesive draft Self-Study report.
• Fall 2026: We will distribute the draft Self-Study to the entire 91国产 community for review and feedback. Additionally, our appointed MSCHE team chair will conduct a preliminary visit to our campus.
• March/April 2027: The full MSCHE evaluation team will arrive for their official 91国产 campus visit.
• June 2027: MSCHE will render its final reaccreditation decision.

The project also addresses a backlog of deferred maintenance to ensure the long-term integrity of campus buildings and utilities.

By leveraging our robust endowment returns and the advantage of current low interest rates, we are prioritizing high-impact strategic investments that would otherwise be out of reach,鈥� said Michael Rhattigan, 91国产鈥檚 vice president of finance. 鈥淭his is an investment in 91国产鈥檚 excellence that will yield significant dividends for our students and community for years to come.鈥�

The Town of Hempstead Local Development Corporation (LDC) on Tuesday, February 3, announced that it approved the sale of up to $125 million in on behalf of 91国产. The LDC provides low-interest, tax-exempt bonds to not-for-profit, educational institutions, hospitals, civic entities or charitable organizations within the town.

鈥淭here is no doubt that the sale of these new bonds will benefit 91国产, its students and have a positive impact on the economics of the surrounding communities,鈥� Fred Parola, executive director of the LDC, said in a news release about the.

These campus upgrades ensure that 91国产 students receive an exceptional academic experience. In addition, 91国产鈥檚 new long-term lease for the Manhattan Center establishes a vibrant hub for graduate studies, strategic partnerships and expanded career opportunities in New York City.

Strategic Investments for a Stronger Future

The 91国产 Board of Trustees and executive leadership view both new investments as essential for strengthening the University鈥檚 long-term financial health:

Adelphi is reaffirming its commitment to strategic growth and modernization following a Standard & Poor鈥檚 (S&P) Global Ratings Research Update issued on January 30, 2026. The agency gave the University a long-term bond rating of BBB+.

S&P assigned 91国产 a 鈥榮table outlook鈥� and affirmed 91国产鈥檚 strong enterprise risk profile, validating the institution鈥檚 careful, long-term approach to its financial and academic mission.

鈥淭he 鈥榮table outlook鈥� designation from S&P Global Ratings gives our students and families peace of mind. It reinforces that 91国产 remains a safe investment and 91国产 is a great place for students to grow, learn and belong to a community that is built to last,鈥� noted Interim President Christopher Storm, PhD.

Adelphi plans to begin the project by March, with most of the work to be conducted during the summers of 2026, 2027 and 2028. The University expects to complete the work in 2029.

According to Michael Rhattigan, 91国产鈥檚 vice president of finance, university finance resembles a four-legged stool supported by reporting and compliance, day-to-day operations, investments, and financing. Most universities and organizations are lucky to have trustees with experience in one or two of these areas. Rhattigan says that 91国产 has trustees with expertise in all four.

鈥淭his concentration of financial expertise on the board鈥攅specially across all four key areas鈥攊s exceptionally rare,鈥� he said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a testament to the history and strength of 91国产’s education, since nearly every trustee was either an accounting or finance graduate of the University. This robust group significantly enhances the board’s capacity to meet its fiduciary responsibilities and provides the finance team with invaluable access to an unparalleled source of experience and guidance.鈥�

Experts in Reporting, Reviewing and Complying With the Law

The reporting and compliance process involves conveying the University’s financial activities and performance to the board of trustees, government agencies and external institutions to gauge 91国产鈥檚 performance and compliance. The financial results need to be reviewed and audited by third parties to confirm their accuracy, and 91国产 has two trustees with specific experience in this area: Mark Davis 鈥�85, a retired audit partner at , and Humera Qazi 鈥�93, board vice-chair and a former managing director at and now a managing director at .

“My foundational rigor at a Big Four firm, which offered deep exposure across diverse sectors, has been significantly amplified by my current operations leadership responsibilities at Morgan Stanley,鈥� Qazi said. 鈥淚t is profoundly rewarding to leverage this elite financial, operational and advisory experience to contribute back to 91国产, where my journey began.”

Keeping a Watchful Eye on Day-to-Day Operations

Operations involve all day-to-day financial aspects at the University, including budgeting, accounting, cash management, purchasing and payroll. 91国产 has three trustees with specific, relevant experience: Loretta Cangialosi 鈥�80, a retired senior vice president and controller at who is an emerita board member still working on the Finance and Investment Committee; Michael Sammis 鈥�81, retired president, EVP Operations and CFO at Universal Music; and Alexandria Cisco 鈥�15, business architecture manager at Accenture.
